Diet Basics

The Clean Program is a 21-day detox program that’s designed to treat symptoms like irritable bowel syndrome, headaches, weight gain and insomnia. The idea is that these symptoms (along with others) could be the result of build-up toxins in the body; the Clean Program is designed to flush these toxins out of the body.

The 21-day program is a challenging plan of eating 2 liquids and 1 solid meals per day. Ideally, dieters will have a liquid meal for breakfast and dinner and a solid meal for lunch, but they can occasionally have liquid breakfast and lunch meals and a solid dinner. Dieters should allow 12 hours between the evening meal and breakfast, in order to allow the body’s digestive system to rest and to increase and enhance the detoxification process.

In essence, there are three specific elements that provide the focus for the Clean Program. These include removing toxins, which involves avoiding processed food and buying organic food whenever possible. The restore focus is about restoring what is lacking in the body; dieters are therefore advised to consume foods rich in nutrients (such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes and seeds), using supplements to increase nutrient density and help the body use the good foods the dieter is eating. This focus also promotes getting at least 15 minutes of direct sunlight a day.

Finally, the rejuvenate focus is about lifestyle changes. Dieters are advised to enjoy “detox enhancing” activities like massages and skin brushing. They are advised to meditate every day, even if only for 5 minutes, and to have a bowel movement each day (even if this requires laxative help).

Recommended Foods

Whole, natural foods are the hallmark of this diet, along with the liquid diet focus. Recommended foods include butternut squash, broccoli, beans, raw nuts, cold pressed oils, green tea, duck, chicken, turkey, millet, quinoa, lentils, mango, pineapple, carrots, rice milk, almond milk, brown rice and leafy green vegetables.

Pros

  • Recommends the use of specific meal replacement shakes that can greatly increase the cost of the program
  • Recommends use of specific supplements, which can also greatly increase the cost of the program
  • Could require increased time spent preparing meals
  • Suggests using colonics and laxatives, both of which can have undesirable effects
  • Can be difficult to follow

Cost

The Clean Program book can be purchased for under $25; food and shake ingredients can be over $100 a week. If dieters purchase the recommended meal replacement shakes and supplements, the cost can reach as much as $500 for the 21 days.

Diet Background

The diet was designed by Dr. Alejandro Junger, a New York City heart surgeon. Junger is also well known in the field of integrative medicine. Junger wanted to design a program to help patients with a variety of ailments ranging from weight gain to depression to allergies.  He worked to design a program that he felt would restore the body to optimal functioning.
